Bookniture is an ingenious multifunctional furniture design that takes space saving and compact furniture to a new level.
Created by Hong Kong designer Mike Mak, Bookniture is touted as “furniture hidden in a book”, and can be used as a nightstand, portable chair, coffee table or even as a small bookshelf.
The piece consists of a set of honeycomb boards that fold out into a small cylindrical structure.
When compacted, Bookniture measures just over a foot in length, meaning it can be carried around like any other large textbook or laptop.
Although Bookniture may not look strong, the designer has run tests on its weight bearing ability, and has even filmed the piece withstanding the pressure of over a tonne.
All Bookniture models are made by hand using book binding techniques to deliver a perfect finish indistinguishable from a regular book when compacted.
The piece comes in the colors ‘field brown’ and ‘leather black’, each with matching felt tops for when Bookniture is expanded to its full form.
The funds to launch this piece were raised using Kickstarter, with the funding goal reached in March 2015. Order here.
