Most of us like to be social, but everyone needs a little privacy at times.
Generally, removing ourselves from social situations or signalling the need for quiet to others typically requires a room change, or at least a clear change of mood to repel would-be socialisers.
Spanish design studio Muka Design Lab has created a chair designed for both states of mind.
Their Revés Chair, first showcased at Valencia Design Week in February 2015, features a back that cocoons around the user, surrounding them in sturdy but soft fabric.
The designer, Lucas Abajo, wrote that the intention was to create an experience “like a child in a tent”, but with the opportunity to remove the shield when company is desired.
The centrepiece of this chair is the fold-down quilted backing that allows it to remain upright but can be pushed back over the chair when needed to function as a normal seat.
Abajo writes that the purpose of this multifunctional offering was to allow users to stay ‘cocooned’ when privacy is needed but allow for socialising when friends are around.
The Revés Chair features beech wood for its legs, commonly used in Spain for furniture, and is locally upholstered in Biscay, on the country’s northern coast.
While the chair may not yet be ready for mass production, Muka Design Lab is in talks with manufacturers to secure a deal.
